AVOCADO SOAP WITH GREEK YOGURT: THE STORY BEHIND AVOLICIOUS

Manas Shashidharan Jacob

Avocado, spirulina, French green clay and a fresh, green scent. A little proof that a bar of soap can be far more interesting than it first appears.

It started with a question

One of the things I love about cold process soapmaking is that it makes you look at everyday ingredients differently. We’re used to thinking about avocado as food, Greek yogurt as breakfast and spirulina as something you add to a smoothie when you’re feeling particularly responsible about your health. But when I started exploring soapmaking, I discovered a whole new world of ingredients and possibilities.

That curiosity became Avolicious, our avocado and Greek yogurt soap, made with spirulina and French green clay. I didn’t want to throw together a collection of ingredients simply because they sounded impressive on a label. I wanted to understand how they could fit into a soap formulation, how they would behave during the making process, and how the finished bar could bring those choices together into one considered product.

What goes into this green bar?

Avocado was a natural place to start. It contains fats that make it an interesting ingredient to explore in soapmaking, though it’s the overall blend of oils and butters that plays a major role in determining the finished bar’s hardness, cleansing and lather. Greek yogurt brings another layer of ingredient curiosity. Milk products contain sugars and other components that can affect how a batch behaves, so they need to be accounted for carefully during formulation and production.

Then there’s spirulina. This blue-green microalgae is known for its vivid colour and its nutritional profile as a food ingredient. In Avolicious, it’s one of the details that makes the formulation distinctive. Alongside French green clay, it helps tell the story of a bar inspired by earthy, green ingredients. Clay is valued in soapmaking for its fine texture and the role it can play in the finished bar’s cleansing experience, but, as always, the overall recipe matters more than any single ingredient.

Cold process soapmaking is part craft, part chemistry. The oils and fats react with sodium hydroxide through saponification, transforming the original ingredients into soap. The ingredients you start with matter, but so does the way they behave together. We can’t assume that every benefit associated with eating avocado or using yogurt directly on skin survives the soapmaking process, and that’s not a claim we want to make. What interests us is creating a well-considered bar from ingredients we’re genuinely curious about.

The smell of something fresh and green

Avolicious is scented with spearmint, cypress and juniper berry essential oils. Imagine opening a small bundle of fresh green leaves: there’s a cool, bright lift from the spearmint, followed by the crisp, woody-green character of cypress and the aromatic, slightly resinous quality of juniper berry.

It’s fresh without being a one-note mint scent. The spearmint gives it that lively opening, while the cypress and juniper bring depth and a green, outdoorsy character that keeps the blend feeling rounded. It’s the sort of fragrance that feels clean and invigorating without needing to shout across the bathroom.

For us, the scent is another part of the formulation, not an afterthought. The green ingredients give Avolicious its identity, and the essential oil blend carries that personality into the bathing experience.

Why we made Avolicious

At WhySoCurious, I want people to feel more connected to the everyday products they use. Most of us don’t spend much time thinking about soap until a product doesn’t suit our preferences, the scent feels overwhelming, or we start wondering what is actually inside the bar. I wanted to make soaps that invite those questions instead of asking people to accept a marketing claim at face value.

Avolicious is for the ingredient-curious: someone who enjoys discovering what goes into a product and appreciates a bar with a little more of a story behind it. If avocado soap with Greek yogurt, spirulina and French green clay sounds interesting to you, take a closer look at Avolicious on WhySoCurious. Explore the full ingredients and see whether this fresh, green bar feels like your kind of soap.

I can’t promise that a soap bar will transform your life. But I can promise there’s a lot more thought behind this green one than its name lets on.
