RICE MILK AND COCONUT MILK SOAP: THE STORY BEHIND RICE & EASY

Manas Shashidharan Jacob

Creamy coconut, soft florals, a little fresh lemon and a warm, resinous finish. This is Rice & Easy.

The curiosity behind Rice & Easy

One of the things I enjoy most about making cold process soap is discovering how many decisions sit behind something we use almost automatically. We step into the shower, reach for a bar and get on with our day. But before that bar reaches your bathroom, someone has had to think about the oils, the butters, the ingredients that make it distinctive, and how the entire formulation will behave.

Rice & Easy grew out of that interest in everyday ingredients. We wanted to explore rice milk and coconut milk in a cold process soap, then build a recipe around them that had its own character. The result is a bar made with rice milk, coconut milk, coconut oil, rice bran oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, castor oil, kokum butter, shea butter and kaolin clay.

That’s quite a list, but the point isn’t to make the ingredient panel look impressive. Each part of the formulation needs to make sense as part of the whole.

Why rice milk and coconut milk?

Rice milk and coconut milk bring familiar ingredients into a different context. In soapmaking, milk ingredients need careful handling because their sugars and other components can affect how a batch heats up and behaves. That’s part of the formulation process: we have to think not just about what goes into the recipe, but how those ingredients will respond once the soapmaking chemistry begins.

The foundation of Rice & Easy is its blend of oils and butters. Coconut, rice bran, olive, sunflower and castor oils contribute different characteristics to the finished bar, while kokum butter and shea butter help shape its overall structure and feel. The proportions matter because soap is a balancing act. A bar needs to cleanse effectively, form the kind of lather people enjoy and hold together through regular use.

We also use kaolin clay, a fine clay commonly included in soap formulations. It’s another example of an ingredient we choose because we’re interested in how it fits into the overall recipe—not because we expect one addition to do everything.

A scent that unfolds in layers

We finish Rice & Easy with an essential oil blend of frangipani, lavender, lemon and frankincense. Imagine the soft, creamy sweetness of tropical flowers meeting the bright zest of fresh lemon. Frangipani brings a gentle floral warmth, while lavender adds an aromatic herbal note that softens the citrus and keeps the blend from feeling too sharp.

Then comes frankincense, grounding the fragrance with a subtle resinous warmth. It gives the lighter notes somewhere to settle, creating a scent that feels clean and smooth, lightly citrusy with a soft floral finish. Rather than smelling like lemon alone or a bouquet of flowers, Rice & Easy brings the notes together into something more rounded.

This is the part of formulation that can be difficult to communicate through an ingredient list alone. Reading “frangipani, lavender, lemon and frankincense” tells you what’s in the blend, but it doesn’t tell you how those notes meet, balance one another and shape the overall impression. We want the scent to feel considered, not crowded.

Essential oils are concentrated aromatic materials, so they need to be used thoughtfully and at suitable levels for the product. A lovely scent is never a reason to ignore proper formulation.

An everyday bar, with plenty to discover

Rice & Easy is a good example of what WhySoCurious is about. We take an everyday essential, get curious about the ingredients and put thought into how they come together. We want people to enjoy the bar, but we also want them to be able to look at the ingredient list and understand that there’s a reason behind the choices.

If rice milk and coconut milk soap sounds like something you’d like to try, explore Rice & Easy on WhySoCurious. Take a look at the full ingredient list, discover its floral-citrus scent and decide whether this bar fits the kind of bathing experience you enjoy.

Because a daily essential doesn’t have to be ordinary in the way it’s made—or in the way it smells.
