UNSCENTED SOAP: WHY WE MADE A BAR WITHOUT ESSENTIAL OILS OR FRAGRANCE OILS
Manas Shashidharan JacobNot everyone wants their shower to smell like a forest, a flower garden or the lobby of a very expensive hotel. And that’s perfectly fine.
A soap bar doesn’t need a scent to have a purpose
When we talk about soap, fragrance often gets a lot of attention. Brands build entire identities around signature scents, and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a beautifully scented product. But I’ve also come to appreciate that fragrance is a preference—not a requirement for a good bathing experience.
Some people find strong scents overwhelming. Others prefer to avoid essential oils or fragrance oils in their personal-care routine. And some simply want their soap to smell like as little as possible. I wanted WhySoCurious to have an option for those people, too, rather than assume everyone is looking for the same experience.
That’s why we make our Unscented Soap Bar. We add no essential oils and no fragrance oils. There’s no perfume blend hidden behind a vague description, and no attempt to make the bar smell like something else. We keep the formulation focused on the soap itself.
What goes into a fragrance-free bar?
Our Unscented Soap Bar is made with olive oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, rice bran oil, almond oil, kokum butter and shea butter. These ingredients form the foundation of the recipe, and each oil or butter contributes to the characteristics of the finished bar.
Cold process soapmaking involves combining oils and fats with a carefully calculated sodium hydroxide solution. Through saponification, the ingredients are transformed into soap. The proportions of the oils matter: they influence qualities such as hardness, cleansing and lather. This is why we pay attention to the recipe as a whole instead of assuming that one particular oil or butter will make a bar perfect on its own.
The absence of added fragrance is an intentional choice, but it doesn’t mean the formulation is an afterthought. We still have to think about how the ingredients work together, how the bar behaves during use and how it fits into an everyday bathing routine.
Unscented doesn’t mean the same thing as hypoallergenic
This distinction matters to us because we want people to make informed choices. Our bar has no added essential oils or fragrance oils, but that does not guarantee that it will suit every person or prevent an allergic reaction. The base ingredients themselves can matter to someone with a known sensitivity, so it’s always worth checking the full ingredient list before buying.
If you’re choosing fragrance-free products because you’ve had trouble with scented ones, we understand why you might want to keep things simple. We just don’t want to promise more than a soap bar can reasonably deliver. Our promise is specific: no added essential oils, no fragrance oils, and a thoughtfully formulated blend of oils and butters.
For those who prefer to leave fragrance out of it
We think a good range should make room for different people and preferences. Not every product needs to be loud, colourful or scented to earn its place. Sometimes, offering a straightforward option is the whole point.
